Genetic selection for high and low immune response in pigs: Effects on immunoglobulin isotype expression.
Veterinary Immunology and Immunopathology, 2005, Volume 108, N°1-2, 71-76

The animals used in this study were pigs belonging to selected genetic lines with the ability to produce high or low immune response (HIR and LIR respectively). Non-selected pigs served as controls. Following immunization with hen eggwhite lysozyme (HEWL) at day 0 and 14 and with bacillus Calmette Guérin (BCG) at day 9, the production of IgM, IgG1 and IgG2 was measured by ELISA and the ratio IgG1:IgG2 was determined for each genetic line at day 0, 9, 14 and 21. The IgG1:IgG2 ratio reflects the type of immune response, cell-mediated or humoral, linked to type 2 and type 1 cytokines respectively. Unlike in LIR pigs, the IgG1:IgG2 ratio of HIR pigs was found to increase and approach 1 following the second immunization, indicating a balanced type 2/type 1 immune response and a putative major resistance to infectious diseases.
