Relationships among immunity, reproductive performance, and viral genetic variation in swine infected with PRRS virus on farms.

PRRSV was inoculated to thirty PRRSV-naive replacement gilts which were subsequently intermingled with the resident pigs of a commercial swine herd. Tonsil biopsies were collected both in inoculated and non-inoculated animals and tested by RT-PCR. Sequencing allowed to identify two genetic clusters of ORF5 one of which was divergent from the exposure strain. Such divergent cluster was present both in inoculated and resident animals, indicating that a co-circulating viral variant achieved infection in already infected animals.
