Antibody responses of PRRS virus-exposed sows following killed virus vaccination pre-farrowing.

Forty sows from a PRRSV infected herd were included in this study. Half of them were vaccinated with a killed virus (KV) vaccine at 60 and 75 days of gestation, the other half were kept as controls. The levels of antibodies were monitored in sows, their colostrum and their offsprings by ELISA and SN. In sows and piglets, SN antibody levels were found significantly increased for KV parent strain (VR-2402) but not for modified live virus (MLV) parent strain (VR-2332) while SN antibody levels resulted increased in the colostrum for both strains. A booster effect can thus be obtain colostrum and piglets through the use of a killed virus vaccine during the pre-farrowing period.
