Quantification of porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) DNA in serum and tonsillar, nasal, tracheo-bronchial, urinary and faecal swabs of pigs with and without postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS).
Veterinary Microbiology, 2005, Volume 111, N°3-4, 223-229
The 146 pigs included in this study had various background, age (2 days to 5 months) and health status. They were classified in relation to their age into younger and older than 1.5 month, and in relation of their PMWS/PCV2 status by in situ hybridization (ISH) into clinical PMWS (n=42), subclinical PMWS (n=29) and PCV2-negative (n=75). Tonsillar, nasal, tracheo-bronchial, urinary and fecal swabs were investigated for PCV2 by TaqMan PCR. The quantification of PCV2 in the various categories of pigs showed that:
- animals with clinical PMWS had significantly higher viral loads,
- the viral load was similar in pigs younger or older than 1.5 month, except for the tracheo-bronchial swabs in which higher viral load were detected for pigs older than 1.5 month,
Thus, PCV2-positive pigs presumably excrete PCV2, through all secretions and excretions tested in the present study, regardless of their PMWS clinical status.
