Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae

em>Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is an old acquaintance when dealing with respiratory disease in pigs. It spreads slowly within a herd, benefits from high animal densities, bad housing conditions and concomitant infections and can become a real problem in finishing pigs. Numerous studies focus on the interaction of M. hyopneumoniae with other pathogens, particularly viral pathogens. M. hyopneumoniae was shown to potentiate PRRSV and, more recently, also PCV2 pathogenicity. Conversely, neither PRRSV, swine influenza virus or PCV2 were found to increase the severity of enzootic pneumonia. The need for accurate vaccination schedules has now become obvious. The timing for M. hyopneumoniae vaccination should be defined taking into account the overall epidemiological situation of the herd, and in particular that of PRRSV infection, so as to avoid interference and achieve an effective control of all diseases. In addition, a vaccination scheme for M. hyopneumoniae should be designed in relation the timing of mycoplasmal infection: two-shot vaccination in the farrowing or nursery units or one-shot vaccination in nursery pigs are more appropriate if infection occurs early in the production cycle (continuous production systems) while vaccination can be delayed to pigs aged 10 weeks in case mycoplasmal infection occurs later, i.e. during the finishing period (all-in/all-out production system with segregated early weaning).
