Nictitating membrane as a potentially useful postmortem diagnostic specimen for classical swine fever.
Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation, 2005, Volume 17, 341-345
The study aimed at determining whether the nictitating membrane (NT) could be a useful specimen to be used in the diagnosis of classical swine fever (CSF). The results obtained from virus isolation, fluorescent antibody test (FAT) and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) on NM and on lymphoid tissues (routine specimens) were compared. CSF virus strains or isolates of different virulence were inoculated to wild boars and domestic pigs. The analysis of the results showed that the NM was indeed a useful specimen for diagnosis of CSF. It was demonstrated that FAT associated with virus isolation and RT-PCR on the NM was a highly sensitive method for CSF diagnosis.
