Porcine dermatitis and nephropathy syndrome (PDNS) is associated with a systemic cytokine expression profile indicative of proinflammation and a Th1 bias.

This study aimed at investigating the systemic cytokine expression profiles of porcine dermatitis and nephropathy syndrome (PDNS)-affected pigs, in order to understand better the pathogenesis of this disease. Five PDNS-affected pigs, 5 naturally PMWS-affected pigs and 5 clinically healthy pigs were included in the study. Multiplex real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and flow cytometric intracellular cytokine detection were used to determine mRNA and protein levels, respectively. The results showed that the role of porcine circovirus type 2 (PPCV2) as the aetiologic agent of PDNS was still not proven as its load in affected animals was low and as the proinflammatory/Th1 cytokine pattern indicated a severe systemic disease.
