Nonsuppurative myocarditis caused by porcine circovirus type 2 in a weak-born piglet.

In a farm free from porcine diseases but affected by reproductive failure during three months in 2001, a weak-born piglet, born from a gilt having farrowed 7 dead piglets and this one, died after 8 days. The piglet was necropsied. Tissue sample analysis revealed a nonsuppurative myocarditis with fibrosis. Immunohistochemical staining and in situ hybridisation showed the presence of PCV2 in cardiomyocytes. It is thought that the myocarditis was caused by intrauterine PCV2 infection.
