Study on the role of gastric Helicobacter infection in gross pathological and histological lesions of the stomach in finishing pigs.

The influence of Helicobacter infections on gastric lesions was investigated in pigs in Hungary. Stomachs of 89 finishing pigs were collected just after slaughtering. They were then divided into 2 groups (40 stomachs with gross pathological lesions in the pars oesophagea and 49 stomachs selected at random). Three samples of gastric tissue were collected from each stomach and analysed by means of histological and immunohistochemical tests. The presence of Helicobacter was confirmed in 85.4% of the cases. The results showed that Helicobacter infections could contribute to the development of pathological changes in the stomachs of finishing pigs, but apparently not to that of gastro-oesophageal ulcers.
