Commerce mondial des animaux d’élevage et des viandes : principaux flux et facteurs d’évolution [worldwide meat and livestock trade: main flows and development factors].

This paper gives an analysis of meat and livestock trade from 1985 to 2003. As far as pork meat is concerned, Canada is the exportation leader for several years (the major part of Canadian exportations goes to the USA) followed by the European Union which represents one quarter of the world pork meat exportations. Pork meat exportations from Brazil are significantly increasing but this trend involves all kinds of meat (beef, ovine, poultry and pork) and Brazil is now considered a leading exporting country for all species. China should also be taken into account as a emerging pork meat exporting country. Conversely, Taiwan had to withdraw from international trade due to the foot-and-mouth disease issue. The USA represent one quarter of pork meat importation, another quarter is represented by Japan. It is noteworthy that Russia plays an increasing part in pork meat importation. The Japanese market remains the most interesting market for pork meat since prices are much higher compared to those of other destinations where prices tend to decrease since the introduction of Brazil in international trade.
