Introduction de cochettes de haut niveau sanitaire en élevage de production: adaptation en quarantaine et verraterie, performances en première mise-bas et conséquences sur l’ensemble de l’élevage [introduction

This study was carried out in a PRRSV-affected farm experiencing respiratory problems (lesions of the respiratory tract observed at slaughter), reproductive disorders (returns to heat, reduced litter size) and sow mortality. A total of 128 gilts of high health status distributed were introduced into the farm and were subjected to an accurate follow-up from entry in quarantine until first farrowing: monitoring of weight gain and temperature, detection of major bacterial pathogens in tonsils swabs or samples, analyses of feces in case of diarrhea, detection of antibodies to several viral and bacterial pathogens in blood samples, recording of reproductive performance (stillborn, mummified and liveborn piglets). The acclimatization of gilts was performed through contact with afterbirths, feces and adult sows. Weight gains were low (440 g/d) and pathological conditions were observed. The situation improved after eight weeks of acclimatization. Some gilts showed delayed estrus, 30% of the gilts were culled before first farrowing and mean reproductive performance was decreased (11.8 piglets/litter). However, this protocol of replacement gilts of high health status did not have negative effects on the health status of the farm and a decrease in the circulation of PRRSV was even observed.
