An experimental infection (II) to investigate the importance of indirect classical swine fever virus transmission by excretions and secretions of infected weaner pigs.

In order to investigate the role of excretions and secretions in the indirect transmission of classical swine fever virus (CSFV), ten susceptible healthy pigs were housed in pens previously occupied for a period 15 days by ten experimentally infected and CSF diseased pigs. Before the introduction of susceptible animals, the pens were neither cleaned nor disinfected. Within the space of 6 days, four out of the ten newly introduced susceptible pigs were detected positive by virus isolation indicating that this type of transmission of CSFV can be of importance in a late, clinical stage of the disease.
