The genetic and amino acid sequence of the ORF7 of 124 North Italian strains of PRRSV was determined. The analyze of this region allowed to clearly differentiate one strain from another and classify all isolates into field strains, European-type-related strains and American-type-related strains. More than 90% of the analyzed isolates had 5.2-10.6% genetic variability and 1.6-12.4% amino acid variability with the Lelystad strain. The variability of the ORF7 sequence could thus be sufficient in a diagnostic context to identify the introduction of a new strain within a herd.
