Experimental reproduction of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome in pigs by dual infection with Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and porcine circovirus type 2.

The intratracheal inoculation of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae at 4 weeks of age followed by the intranasal inoculation of PCV2 at 6 weeks of age in pigs resulted in the potentiation of the severity of PCV2-associated lung and lymphoid lesions, in an increased amount and prolonged presence of PCV2 antigen and an increased incidence of PMWS in dual-infected pigs compared with the singular PCV2-inoculated group. This dual-infection model indicates that a lack of control of M. hyopneumoniae infection through vaccination may be more detrimental than a vaccine-induced enhancement of PCV2 replication.
