The efficacy of alternative vaccination schemes against Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae with Hyoresp® (MERIAL) was evaluated under field conditions in a heavy pig production system (pigs of 160-180 kg of weight slaughtered at about 9 months of age). Three slaughter lots of at least 480 pigs were included in the study. Each lot was divided into two homogeneous groups of control and vaccinated animals. The vaccinated group of each lot was divided into two subgroups: early vaccination and late vaccination. In the first two lots, pigs received two shots at a 3-4 week interval, early vaccination started on entry in the postweaning unit and late vaccination at about 60 days following entry in the postweaning unit. In the third lot, pigs had already received one shot of vaccine before their arrival, early vaccination consisted thus in a second shot on entry in the postweaning unit and late vaccination in a second shot on entry in the fattening unit Lung lesions were scored at slaughter using the Madec scoring system. Serological data regarding M. hyopneumoniae and other respiratory agents were collected as well as zootechnical parameters (weight, ADG, etc.). Interestingly, the early vaccination scheme gave much better results and it appears to be the more profitable for the production of heavy pigs.
