Immunity in E. coli postweaning diarrhea in pigs.

While neonatal E. coli diarrhea can be controlled through vaccination of sows, postweaning E. coli diarrhea (PWD) remains a challenging issue for swine production systems, and the current move towards early weaning (1-2 weeks of age rather than 4-5 weeks) increases the need for effective means of control. Postweaning diarrhea is caused by K88-positive or F18-positive ETEC and the only way to protect pigs against PWD would be to achieve sufficient levels of protective antibodies in the intestine. The results of various studies regarding attempts of vaccination against PWD by the parenteral or the oral route and through passive immunization with egg yolk antibodies are reported but to date none of them has fulfilled all the required conditions to give raise to an effective tool to control PWD.
