Adherence of diarrheagenic Escherichia coli strains to epithelial cells.
Infection and Immunity, 2005, Volume 73, N°1, 18-29
For pathogenic Escherichia coli, the adhesion to the intestinal wall is the first step of the colonization of the host’s gastrointestinal tract. The previously known and novel adherence factors of the six major categories of diarrheagenic E. coli strains are reviewed: enteropathogenic (EPEC), enterohemorrhagic (EHEC), enterotoxigenic (ETEC), enteroaggregative (EAEC), enteroinvasive (EIEC) and diffusely adhering (DAEC) E. coli. A better understanding of the mechanisms of adhesion of diarrheagenic E.coli strains will help to design new means of control.
