Prevalences of welfare-related lesions at post-mortem meat-inspection in Danish sows.
Preventive Veterinary Medicine, 2004, Volume 64, Nº2-4, 123-131
The daily post-mortem meat inspection recordings of four Danish slaughterhouses were used to evaluate health and welfare within sow herds. First, the recorded lesions were classified as either infection or welfare related. Then an analysis was performed so as to identify the underlying factors responsible for such lesions. Eventually the herds delivering sows to these four slaughterhouses were classified according the level of welfare they provided sows with. Overall, great variations between herds were observed. The most frequently encountered lesions were due to abscesses, scars, decubital ulcers and bites.
