Assessment of the risk of transmission of vaccine viruses by using insufficiently cleaned injection devices.

Under field conditions, rinsing injection devices with water is a common practice. However it may occur that traces of a previous vaccine remain in the injection device and contaminate another vaccine. This study, carried out on cattle with BVD vaccines, demonstrated that even low levels of contamination result in seroconversion to both the contaminating and the contaminated vaccines. Therefore, in order to avoid any interference with eradication programmes it is highly recommended to use different injection devices for different types of vaccines.
