Antimicrobial resistance

AARESTRUP FM
Monitoring of antimicrobial resistance among food animals: principles and limitations.
Journal of Veterinary Medicine. B., 2004, Volume 51, Nº8-9, 380-388

Antimicrobial resistance is an actual threat for human and animal health. Moreover, the trade of live animals and food of animal origin increasingly takes place out of the national and even the European borders and implies that also the problems and control measures should be considered on an international scale. Monitoring the occurrence of antimicrobial resistance is a first step which allows to get an overview of the situation and to design appropriate programs of intervention. The various parameters to consider when designing a monitoring program are reviewed and several examples of national and international systems are reported. In most countries, particular attention is focused on antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella, Campylobacter, E. coli and E. faecium. A few years ago, the creation of a European concerted action (ARBAO) revealed the need for a standardization of the tests performed in Europe for monitoring antimicrobial resistance and generated interesting data, among which the occurrence of resistance to fluoroquinolones among E. coli isolated from infections of pigs in Europe (more information about ARBAO are available at http://www.dfvf.dk/Default.asp?ID=9753).
