HAMPSON D, PLUSKE J
Role of diet in managing enteric disease in pigs.
In Practice, 2004, Volume 26, Nº8, 438-443

Nowadays, diet is gaining considerable importance due to the increasing antimicrobial resistance and the increasing pressure to reduce the use of antimicrobials. In this context, it is necessary to understand the potential role of diet in managing enteric disease in pigs. Various bacterial infections of young and growing pigs are considered together with the impact that diet can have on each of these diseases: postweaning colibacillosis, proliferative enteropathy (Lawsonia intracellularis), intestinal spirochaetosis (Brachyspira pilosicoli), dysentery (Brachyspira hyodysenteriae), salmonellosis, stomach ulcers (Helicobacter species). Providing pigs with a highly digestible diet seems to be the primary objective. This can be made submitting cereals to a physical processing (cooking, expansion), using cereals with high contents of soluble starch or feeding fermented liquid diets. In several cases pelleted diets resulted to increase the risk of enteric disease when compared to liquid feeding or cooked white rice. However, feeding pellets remain a more practical and more efficient from feed conversion so before changing diet all parameters should be carefully considered.
