Observations préliminaires de l'effet du nettoyage-désinfection de la machine à soupe sur le syndrome entérotoxémique chez le porc à l'engraissement [Preliminary results of the impact of cleaning-disinfection

High rates of sudden death of pigs due to gastrointestinal problems were reported in five farms. This syndrome, usually called "enterotoxaemia" by French farmers, includes intestinal hemorrhages, bloat, intestinal torsion and is always associated with distension of the gastrointestinal tract. In order to investigate the role of potentially contaminated liquid feeding in this situation, the liquid feeding system of all farms was cleaned and disinfected. The impact of the cleaning-disinfection process on mortality varied from farm to farm: increased mortality (2 farms), no change (1 farm), decreased mortality (1 farm). These results suggest that the hygiene conditions of liquid feeding may act only as a co-factor in the occurrence of the sudden deaths observed in these farms. Therefore, the cleaning-disinfection of the liquid feeding system is not the answer to all gastroointestinal diseases in swine herds but it is noteworthy that leaving a liquid feeding system in bad hygiene conditions increases the risks of health disorders in pigs.
