An outbreak of Classical Swine Fever (CSF) occurred in the Indonesian province of Papua in April 2004. The spread of the disease to Papua New Guinea (country which shares an island with Papua) and Australia (due to the proximity of its North coast with such island) is an actual threat. In Papua New Guinea, a CSF outbreak could have heavy economic and social consequences for villagers. In Australia, free of CSF since 1961, it would mean heavy economic loss. All Australian authorities dealing with animal health have been informed of the risk and asked to remain in state of alert.
