Distribution of PCV2 DNA in the reproductive tract, oocytes and embryos of PCV2 antibody-positive pigs.

The distribution of PCV2 DNA in the reproductive tract of PCV2 antibody positive gilts was investigated. In addition, 120 embryos were collected from 6 PCV2-antibody positive sows slaughtered 6 days after breeding and submitted to PCV2 DNA detection as well. None of them resulted positive to PCV2 DNA. The results are summarized in the following table:

The detection of PCV2 nucleic acid in the different parts of the reproductive tract indicates that they all can act as potential sources of PCV2 contamination for embryos. The fact that none of the tested embryos resulted positive to PCV2 DNA suggests that embryos fertilized in vivo may have the ability to block PCV2 internalization but it does not mean that embryos obtained by embryo transfer or by in vitro fertilization are protected from PCV2 infection. Further studies are needed to clarify this particular.
