Diagnostic investigation into the role of Chlamydiae in cases of increased rates of return to oestrus in pigs.
Veterinary Record, 2004, Volume 155, Nº19, 593-596

In Switzerland, a screening for Chlamydiae (Chlamydophila abortus, Chlamydophila suis and Chlamydia-like organisms) was performed on cervical swabs and serum samples collected in sows from a herd experiencing irregular returns to estrus and sows from a herd without reproductive disorders (control group). Cervical swabs were tested by 16S rRNA PCR and serum samples by ELISA. More C. abortus were found on the cervix of the sows in affected than in control herds while there was no significant difference in antibodies. The authors make reference to a similar study carried out in Germany and underline that several points of the present study drew their attention, i.e. the high percentage of sows with antibodies to Chlamydiaceae in both herds, indicating that sows are commonly in contact with Chlamydiaceae, together with the low prevalence of Chlamydiaceae and the high prevalence of Chlamydia-like organisms in the cervical swabs.
