Survey of clinical problems identified in pet pigs in the UK.
Veterinary Record, 2004, Vol. 155, N?9, 269-271
The results of a survey carried out among 300 members of the UK Potbellied Pig Club Pet pigs about the clinical problems encountered in pet pigs are reported. The most frequent conditions mentioned by pet pig owners were related to the locomotor system (lameness and overgrown feet) and the skin (dry, flaky skin). Some cases of aggressive behavior in females were also mentioned which were resolved by ovario-hysterectomy. The author deplores the fact that many pig owners have criticized the quality of veterinary care provided by general practitioners. Indeed, he underlines that many conditions do not require particular knowledge of pigs, the problem of flaky skin, for example, can be resolved with medicated shampoo combined with ivermectin. Even if pet pigs are quite an unusual species they are still animals, so why one should not dare?
