Continuing evolution of H9N2 influenza viruses in Southeastern China.

The evolution of H9N2 influenza viruses in live-poultry-markets in Hong-Kong was investigated through the antigenic and phylogenetic analysis of hemagglutinin (HA) of 19 isolates. Three of the genotypes identified in this study were shown to replicate in the respiratory tract of swine which shed the virus for at least 5 days. It is essential to always keep in mind that pigs may act as mixing vessels for the reassortment of influenza viruses from mammalian and avian sources. Moreover, previous studies have already reported the presence of H9N2 viruses in swine in Asia. A monitoring of H9N2 viruses in swine seems thus of primary importance.
