The presence of co-infections in pigs with clinical signs of PMWS in The Netherlands: a case-control study.
Research in Veterinary Science, 2004, Volume 77, N?2, 177-184
This study was carried out in The Netherlands in order to investigate PCV2 infection in terms of frequency and existence of potential co-infections in pigs with or without clinical signs of PMWS. It included 60 pigs with clinical signs of PMWS originating from 20 different herds and 180 pigs without clinical signs of PMWS (control pigs). Among other investigations, virus isolation was carried out in all tissue samples for PCV2 and PCR was carried out for the detection of PCV2, porcine parvovirus (PPV) and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV-EU and PRRSV-US). A quantitative PCV2 RT-PCR was subsequently performed to quantify the amount of PCV2 DNA copies. Confirming previous findings, results indicated that:
-
- 100% of pigs with clinical signs and 50% of the healthy pigs were PCV2;
- positive high PCV2 viral loads were associated with clinical signs;
- PCV2 infection was not always associated with clinical signs;
- low PCV2 antibody levels were associated with high PCV2 viral loads;
- concurrent infection with PRRSV and PCV2 was more frequent in pigs
with?? clinical signs than in healthy pigs;
- co-infection with both the European and the North American types of
PRRSV was?frequently detected in pigs with clinical signs.
