Postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome: a review of aetiology, diagnosis and pathology.
Veterinary Journal, 2004, Volume 168, Nº1, 41-49
An important concept to keep in mind is that the detection of PCV2 alone does not mean PMWS. Indeed, establishing a diagnosis of PMWS requires a definite pathway comprising of three criteria: evidence of typical clinical signs, evidence of typical histopathological findings in lymph nodes and detection of PCV2 DNA within the lesions. This paper focuses on these three aspects. The importance of histopathology is underlined and immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization are indicated as more suitable techniques than PCR for detection of PCV2.
