Enteritis associated with porcine circovirus 2 in pigs.
Canadian Journal of Veterinary Research, 2004, Volume 68, Nº3, 218-221

Six post-weaning pigs with diarrhea were included in this study. Two of them originated from a herd experiencing epizootic diarrhea, two other ones from herds with intermittent diarrhea and the last two ones from herds with growth retardation and diarrhea. Antibiotic treatment did not improve health conditions in any of these animals which were euthanized and necropsied. Tissue samples were collected for histopathological examination, virus isolation and in situ hybridization. Potential infection by other pathogens (Lawsonia intracellularis, Brachyspira pilosicoli, Brachyspira hyodysenteriae, Salmonella typhimurium, PPV, PRRSV and CSFV) was ruled out except for one pig in which S. typhimurium was isolated from the colon. Histopathology revealed granulomatous inflammation, lymphoid depletion and presence of intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies in the Peyer's patches in the small and large intestines. Lymph nodes did not show any microscopic lesions which confirmed that these pigs were not cases of PMWS. PCV2 was detected by in situ hybridization in Peyer's patches of all 6 pigs and PCV2 could be isolated from the homogenates of small and large intestine of two pigs. In order to establish the diagnosis of PCV2-associated enteritis the authors considered three criteria, i.e. presence of diarrhea, presence of characteristic microscopic lesions in the Peyer's patches but not in lymph nodes and detection of PCV2 within these lesions. These results indicate that PCV2-associated enteritis may be a clinical manifestation of PCV2 infection distinct from PMWS.
