Prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Campylobacter coli isolated from fattening pigs in France.
Veterinary Microbiology, 2004, Volume 101, Nº2, 91-99

In order to evaluate the prevalence and antibiotic resistance of Campylobacter coli in French swine, 240 stomachs (10 per farm) were collected at slaughter from fattening pigs originating from 24 farms located in different areas of France and investigated for the presence of C. coli. All isolates were identified by biochimical tests and multiplex PCR and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined for erythromycin, tetracycline, ampicillin, enrofloxacin and nalidixic acid. The results indicate that 50.4% of the pigs included in the study were positive for the presence of C. coli but 4 farms were free of C. coli and marked differences in the number of positive pigs per farm were observed in the positive farms. Interestingly, this paper is the first source of information available about antibiotic resistance of Campylobacter in French swine. The analysis of antibiotic resistance revealed that 79 and 55% of the isolates were resistant to tetracycline and erythromycin respectively. In addition, 37% of the isolates were resistant to at least 3 antimicrobial drugs. The fact that contaminated animal products can be a source of contamination for humans and the fact that Campylobacter have the ability of integrating heterologous DNA and thus the ability of transmitting and acquiring antibiotic resistance underline the necessity of monitoring antimicrobial drug resistance of Campylobacter in swine.
