Genotypic prevalence of the adhesin involved in diffuse adherence in Escherichia coli isolates in pre-weaned pigs with diarrhoea in Korea.
Journal of Veterinary Medicine. B., 2004, Volume 51, Nº4, 166-168

The presence of the adhesin involved in diffuse adherence (AIDA) was recently demonstrated in enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) isolated from pigs with edema and postweaning diarrhea. In this study, a screening by PCR of 1002 strains of Escherichia coli isolated from pigs with pre-weaning diarrhea was carried out in order to assess the prevalence of the gene encoding for AIDA. All isolates were also tested by PCR for genes encoding for virulence factors such as fimbrial adhesins (F4, F5, F6, F18 and F41) and toxins (Sta, STb, LT, EAST1 and STx2e). The detection of AIDA gene by PCR showed that 23 isolates out of the 1002 tested were AIDA-positive. The 23 AIDA genomic sequences shared a 100% homology. Among the 23 AIDA-positive isolates, 20 had at least one other virulence factor. The presence of AIDA in ETEC isolated from pigs with pre-weaning diarrhea was thus demonstrated and should be further investigated in order to understand its role as a potential virulence factor in preweaning diarrhea caused by ETEC.
