Scourge of the Asian pig industry
Asian Pork Magazine 2003 June/July: 24-26
Classical Swine Fever (CSF) poses a great threat to the pig industry, especially in Asia where the disease remains endemic. Several factors peculiar to the Asian world make it difficult to implement successful eradication measures and control strategies. In addition to the persistence of backyard pig farms, other problematic issues such as erratic vaccination programmes, introduction of pigs from multiple sources, cross border smuggling of pigs, minimal laboratory diagnostic support etc. put a brake on achieving disease control. Compared to the high economic impact of the disease in the Western world, Asian countries are not compelled by economic imperatives and are likely to be faced with several outbreaks of CSF for many years.
