The role of maternally derived antibodies, age and other factors on vaccinal response (the percentage game)

A number of vaccines to protect against enzootic pneumonia (EP) caused by M. hyopneumoniae are available and the vaccinal response of piglets receiving maternally derived antibodies (MDAs) from sows is considered in this paper. A review of the general immune system (non-specific and specific) is presented together with results of experiments focusing on the vaccinal response of piglets, effects of age and adjuvants on immunostimulation and vaccination programmes. It has been demonstrated that as MDAs fell over time, lung lesions caused by EP also fell and the vaccinal response improved. MDAs play a negative role in the response of piglets vaccinated with a M. hyopneumoniae vaccine. Age is not an important factor since piglets are able to react immunologically after birth and thus respond to vaccination.
