Effect of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae sow vaccination on piglet colonization at weaning

Two consecutive weekly farrowing groups (two replicates) were used in an experiment demonstrating the effect of sow vaccination against M. hyopneumoniae on the prevalence of the bacterium in piglets. Each replicate was divided into a vaccinated and non vaccinated group (vaccination 5 and 3 weeks before farrowing). Seroconversion of sows and piglets was assessed using Tween-20 ELISA. Prevalence of M. hyopneumoniae in nasal swabs from sows and piglets was assessed using a nested PCR. It was shown that in each replicate over 80% of vaccinated sows seroconverted and their piglets were tested positive for M. hyopneumoniae antibodies due to passive immunity transfer. The number of piglets tested positive by N-PCR at weaning from vaccinated groups was lower than in the non-vaccinated groups. The difference was statistically more significant in the first replicate. Hence, the prevalence of M. hyopneumoniae in piglets can be reduced by sow vaccination.
