The incidence of helminth infections in sows and piglets in southern Germany.
Tierarztliche Umschau 47:179-190, 1992

Faecal samples from 61 sows from 7 breeding farms were examined at weekly intervals during lactation and monthly at other times over a period of one year. Faecal samples from 413 piglets of these sows were also examined at weekly intervals until 9 weeks of age. The number of helminth species found varied from 1 to 3, but no helminths w4re detected in sows from 2 farms. The incidence of Oesophagostomum spp infection in 3 of the herds was 100%, that for Ascaris suum ranged from 10 to 40% in 4 herds and for Trichuris suis between 6.4 and 60% of sows were infected in 3 herds. The incidence was not associated with herd size nor with the type of flooring, straw r slats. The average number of eggs in individual animals ranged from 178.9 to 645.1 e.p.g. for Oesophagostomum spp., from 133 to 508 e.p.g. for A. suum and from <67 to 164.2 e.p.g. for T. suis; these were independent of season, herd size and housing and management conditions. During pregnancy and lactation, Oesophagostomum eggs were detected in faeces from 15.2 to 47.8% of the 46 sows, A. suum eggs in 2.2 to 6.5% and T. suis eggs in 4.3 to 10.9%. No helminth eggs were detected in samples from the piglets.
