Internal parasitism of feeder pigs in Southern Illinois.

Fecal samples from fattening pigs sent monthly to auction from 84 farms in six counties, and from breeding sows on 16 of those farms were examined for nematode eggs and coccidial oocysts. Of the fattening herds 92% were infected with Ascaris, Trichuris and/or Oesophagostomum, as were 12 of the 16 groups of breeding sows. Of 74 batches of fattening pigs reared on concrete or slats 49% were positive for one or more of the three nematodes, compared with 81% of 167 batches reared on pasture or soil. Anthelmintic treatment was apparently ineffective in that 72% of 149 treated batches, and 70% of 92 untreated batches were positive, but dosage was haphazard. All of 17 batches of untreated pigs reared on slatted floors in two farms were negative. Coccidia (not identified) were found in 55% of fatten9ing herds and in sows in 50% of breeding groups.
